HIMARS

The truck-mounted rocket launcher that let Ukraine hit Russian depots and headquarters with precision from 50 miles away, and shoot before anyone could shoot back.

The M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System is not a wonder weapon. It is a five-ton army truck with a single pod of rockets on the back, and its significance lies almost entirely in the boring parts: it is accurate, it is fast, and it can leave.

Shoot and scoot

A conventional artillery battery fires shells in the general direction of a target and corrects. HIMARS fires a satellite-guided rocket, the GMLRS, that lands within a few meters of a coordinate at ranges up to about 80 kilometers. A pod holds six of them, or a single larger ATACMS missile that flies several hundred kilometers. One truck can therefore do what a battalion of guns used to do, with a fraction of the ammunition and none of the collateral damage that made older rocket artillery indiscriminate.

The truck matters as much as the rocket. Because the system reloads by swapping a whole pod, and because it can be driving within a minute of firing, it is very hard to kill with counter-battery fire, which works by tracing the arc of a shell back to its origin and shelling that spot. By the time the return fire arrives, the launcher is a kilometer away under a tree.

What it did in Ukraine

The first four launchers reached Ukraine in late June 2022, four months into the full-scale invasion, and roughly twenty were in the country by autumn. Their effect was disproportionate to the number because they attacked a weakness in the way the Russian army fights. Russian artillery consumed enormous quantities of shells, which arrived by rail and were stockpiled in large dumps close to the front, and Russian command posts sat inside that same belt. All of it had been sitting comfortably beyond the range of Ukrainian guns.

Within weeks Ukraine had destroyed dozens of ammunition depots, along with bridges, headquarters, and rail junctions. Russian logistics were pushed back beyond 80 kilometers, which meant longer truck runs, fewer shells at the front, and a measurable fall in Russian fire volume. In the south, repeated strikes on the crossings over the Dnipro left Russian forces around Kherson supplied by pontoon and barge; the city was abandoned in November 2022. It is the clearest case in the war of a modest number of precise weapons changing an operational situation, and it made HIMARS a folk hero in Ukraine, complete with songs and merchandise.

The counter-move

Nothing stays decisive for long. Russia adapted by dispersing its ammunition into many small dumps, moving headquarters further back, hardening what it could, and above all by jamming. GPS-guided munitions depend on a faint satellite signal, and by 2023 Russian electronic warfare was degrading GMLRS accuracy badly enough that Ukrainian and American officials acknowledged the problem publicly. Russia also hunted the launchers themselves with drones and ballistic missiles, and Ukraine answered with decoys, some of them wooden, that absorbed expensive missiles.

The lesson generalized well beyond this war. Precision at range collapses the distinction between the front line and the rear, so armies must now disperse everything and assume constant observation. And the contest between a guided weapon and the electronic warfare that blinds it has become one of the central technical races of modern combat. A weapon that works spectacularly in its first season is a weapon whose enemy is now studying it.
