Al-Khwarizmi

The Baghdad scholar whose book around 820 founded algebra and whose Latinized name became the word algorithm.

Every time a phone unlocks by recognizing a face, a bank compounds interest, or a spacecraft plots a course, it runs on ideas traceable to one man who worked in a Baghdad library twelve centuries ago. Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi did not just solve equations. He turned problem-solving into a system, and two of his gifts to the world are now so basic that we rarely notice them: the word algebra, and the word algorithm.

The book that named a discipline

Around 820, at the House of Wisdom under the caliph al-Ma'mun, al-Khwarizmi wrote Al-Kitab al-Mukhtasar fi Hisab al-Jabr wal-Muqabala, the Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing. Al-jabr, meaning restoration, was the act of moving a subtracted quantity to the other side of an equation; al-muqabala meant balancing like terms. Latin translators kept the first word, and al-jabr became algebra. What made the book revolutionary was not any single trick but its ambition. It laid out a general, step-by-step method for solving whole classes of linear and quadratic equations, complete with worked proofs. He wrote entirely in words, with no symbols at all, yet he was doing something genuinely new: treating an unknown as an object you could manipulate by fixed rules.

Numerals, and a name that became a word

His second great service was popularizing the Hindu-Arabic decimal system, the nine digits and the zero, in a treatise that survives only in a Latin version titled Algoritmi de numero Indorum. Medieval Europeans, still wrestling with clumsy Roman numerals, learned place-value arithmetic from that translation, and they mangled his name, al-Khwarizmi, into Algoritmi. From there it drifted into algorithm, the word we now use for any finite recipe of steps a machine can follow. A thousand years before computers existed, their defining concept already carried his name.

More than one field

Algebra was only part of the work. He compiled the Zij al-Sindhind, a set of astronomical tables that Muslim and later European astronomers used for centuries, and wrote Kitab Surat al-Ard, a geography that corrected and updated Ptolemy's coordinates for hundreds of cities and landmarks. Across all of it runs the same instinct: to organize, to generalize, to build a method others could reuse. That instinct is why he is remembered not as a clever calculator but as a founder. Modern finance, physics, engineering, and computing all rest on manipulating unknown quantities by general rules, and it was al-Khwarizmi who first made that manipulation a discipline with a name.

The next time a piece of software is called an algorithm, it is quietly repeating the name of the scholar who, around 820, decided that mathematics should not just answer a question but teach a method for answering all questions of its kind.
