Avicenna (Ibn Sina)

Persian physician and philosopher whose Canon of Medicine served as a standard textbook in Europe and the Islamic world for six centuries.

When a medical student in sixteenth-century Padua or Montpellier opened a textbook, there was a good chance the author had been dead for five hundred years and had written in Arabic, in Central Asia. Ibn Sina, known to Europe as Avicenna, was a child prodigy who claimed to have mastered all of medicine by eighteen, and he grew into one of the most influential thinkers the medieval world produced, in any language or faith.

The Canon

He finished the Canon of Medicine (al-Qanun fi al-Tibb) around 1025: five books, roughly a million words, an attempt to organize the entire medical inheritance of the Greek, Persian, and Indian traditions into one coherent system. It defined disease, drugs, anatomy, and treatment in a structure so clear that it became the standard reference in Islamic teaching and, after Gerard of Cremona translated it in twelfth-century Toledo, in European universities as well. It was still assigned in some medical schools into the seventeenth century, roughly six hundred years of shelf life for a single book. Along the way Avicenna argued that certain diseases spread through contamination, recommended isolating the sick, and set out rules for testing whether a drug actually works, ideas that gesture toward contagion theory and the controlled trial.

Not just preserving the Greeks

His other monument, the Book of Healing (Kitab al-Shifa), had nothing to do with curing bodies. It was a vast encyclopedia of logic, mathematics, physics, and metaphysics meant to heal ignorance of the soul. In it he wove Aristotle together with his own arguments, distinguishing a thing's essence from its existence and staging the famous floating man thought experiment, in which a person suspended in empty space with no sensation at all would still know that he exists. This is the crucial point about the Islamic Golden Age. Figures like Avicenna were not copyists guarding Greek manuscripts until Europe woke up. They extended the material, argued with it, and rebuilt it, and later European thinkers from Thomas Aquinas to the early anatomists worked directly on what they had added.

The scale of a life

Avicenna did all this while serving as a court physician and administrator, often on the move between Persian cities as his patrons rose and fell, reportedly writing at night and dictating long passages from memory. He produced something like 450 works, of which around 240 survive. He died in 1037 at Hamadan, in western Iran, where his mausoleum still stands and draws visitors today.

To call the European Renaissance and Scientific Revolution purely Western achievements is to forget the textbook that trained their physicians, and the polymath from Central Asia who wrote it, in Arabic, before Oxford or Bologna had a medical faculty at all.
