Natanz

Iran's largest, heavily fortified uranium-enrichment site, sabotaged for two decades and then bombed by the United States and Israel in 2025 and 2026.

Two hours' drive south of Tehran, past the salt flats of central Iran, sits a walled compound that has done more than any other place to shape the world's fear of an Iranian bomb. Natanz is the heart of Iran's uranium-enrichment program, the site where thousands of centrifuges spin to concentrate the isotope that fuels reactors and, at higher purity, weapons. Much of it is buried deep underground, built to survive the airstrike everyone has always assumed might come. Its name has become shorthand for the whole program.

A fortress for spinning metal

Natanz was a secret until 2002, when an Iranian opposition group exposed it and inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency arrived to find a facility Iran had never declared. Its centerpiece is the Fuel Enrichment Plant, a hall large enough for tens of thousands of centrifuges, sunk beneath roughly eight meters of earth and concrete and ringed by anti-aircraft guns. There, cascades of centrifuges spin uranium hexafluoride gas at supersonic speeds, slowly raising the share of the fissile isotope uranium-235. The percentage reached at Natanz is the single most watched number in the standoff: reactor fuel needs under 5 percent, and weapons-grade is around 90, so every step up the enrichment ladder shortens the theoretical path to a bomb. Above the buried halls sits a smaller pilot plant where Iran tests new centrifuge designs before deploying them below.

The most sabotaged site on earth

Because it is so central, Natanz has been attacked more inventively than perhaps any facility in history. Around 2009 and 2010, a cyberweapon later known as Stuxnet, widely attributed to the United States and Israel, quietly ordered its centrifuges to tear themselves apart while showing operators normal readings, wrecking roughly a thousand of them. Sabotage did not stop there. In July 2020 a fire gutted a new centrifuge-assembly building, and in April 2021 an explosion knocked out power to the underground halls, an attack Iran blamed on Israel. Each strike set the program back by months; each time, Iran rebuilt, often installing more advanced machines than before. After the 2021 blast, Iran began enriching to 60 percent for the first time, its highest level ever and a short technical step from weapons-grade.

From sabotage to bunker-busters

The covert phase ended in June 2025. Israel opened a twelve-day air campaign on the 13th that functionally destroyed the above-ground pilot plant where the 60 percent material was being made and wrecked the site's power supply; the IAEA later assessed that the centrifuges in the underground halls had been severely damaged if not destroyed outright. On June 22 the United States joined, dropping GBU-57 bunker-busters, a weapon designed for exactly this target set, on Natanz and the deeper site at Fordow. The strikes came back in February 2026, when a far larger American and Israeli campaign killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in its opening hours, and the IAEA confirmed fresh damage to the entrances of the underground plant on March 3. Through all of it, radiation levels outside the fence stayed normal.

The heavier loss was the watching. Inspectors have had no access to Iran's declared uranium inventories since mid-2025, and roughly 440 kilograms of 60 percent material that existed before the strikes remains formally unaccounted for, enough by Rafael Grossi's estimate for more than ten warheads if it were enriched further. The agency says it has no evidence Iran is building a weapon. It also has no way to prove that it is not.

The center of the standoff

Every diplomatic effort over Iran's nuclear program, from the 2015 deal to the war that followed its collapse, came down in the end to what happens inside Natanz: how many centrifuges are spinning, how advanced they are, and to what level they are enriching. That is why the site drew inspectors, cyberweapons, and finally bunker-busters. The uncomfortable result is that the world has now spent twenty years and a war trying to slow the machines beneath the desert floor, and knows less about what is left of them than at any time since the place was discovered in 2002.
