Sputnik

The beach-ball-sized Soviet sphere that became the first artificial satellite in 1957, opening the Space Age and terrifying the West.

On October 4, 1957, a polished metal sphere about the size of a beach ball began circling the Earth once every ninety-six minutes, beeping. It weighed 84 kilograms, carried no camera and no weapon, and did almost nothing beyond broadcasting a steady radio tone. And it frightened the most powerful nation on Earth. The Soviet Union had just launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite, and with it opened the Space Age and the superpower space race.

A beeping metal ball

Sputnik was deliberately simple. The name is usually translated as traveling companion or fellow traveler, and its full Soviet designation meant roughly elementary satellite. The craft was a sphere 58 centimeters across, built from aluminum alloy two millimeters thick, trailing four whip antennas up to nearly three meters long. Inside sat batteries and two radio transmitters that beeped on frequencies simple enough for amateur operators around the world to pick up. It lifted off from a launch site in the Kazakh desert, later known as Baikonur, and settled into an orbit that carried it from roughly 220 to more than 900 kilometers above the surface. The batteries died after about three weeks, the beeping stopped, and in early January 1958 the satellite burned up in the atmosphere.

Why a beep frightened Washington

The panic was never really about the satellite. It was about the rocket underneath it. The launcher was a modified R-7 Semyorka, the world's first intercontinental ballistic missile. The logic was brutally simple: a rocket that could loft 84 kilograms into orbit and drop it anywhere along its path could just as easily deliver a nuclear warhead to an American city. Overnight the two oceans that had always shielded the United States looked beside the point. Night after night, Americans went outside to watch a Soviet machine pass overhead. Newspapers called it the Sputnik crisis. President Eisenhower tried to play it down, and the public refused to be reassured, especially after the first American answer, a Vanguard rocket, blew up on the launch pad that December in front of the cameras.

The American answer

The shock triggered a wave of reform that reshaped the country. In early 1958 Washington created the Advanced Research Projects Agency, later DARPA, to prevent another technological surprise. That summer it established NASA, which began operations in October 1958. Congress passed the National Defense Education Act, pouring money into science, mathematics, and foreign-language teaching on the theory that classrooms were now a front line of the Cold War. The United States put its own satellite, Explorer 1, into orbit at the end of January 1958. The little sphere that beeped for three weeks and then burned up had rewired American schooling, launched the world's premier space agency, and turned the rivalry of two superpowers into a contest fought out over everyone's heads.
