ICBM (Intercontinental Ballistic Missile)
The rocket that put any point on earth thirty minutes from any other, abolishing the distance that had protected great powers for all of previous history.

An intercontinental ballistic missile is a rocket with a range above 5,500 kilometers that spends most of its journey outside the atmosphere and unpowered. It burns for three to five minutes, coasts through space along a ballistic arc for twenty-odd minutes, and then its warheads reenter at something like twenty times the speed of sound. Moscow to Washington takes about thirty minutes. Nothing in the middle of that flight can be recalled, and until very recently nothing could stop it.
That is the whole strategic significance. Bombers can be turned around and shot down. Armies take months to arrive and can be met. The ICBM removed both the warning and the option of defense, and in doing so it ended the oldest advantage in great-power politics, which was being far away.
How it arrived
The Soviet Union got there first. The R-7 Semyorka flew successfully on 21 August 1957, and six weeks later the same booster put Sputnik in orbit, which is how the world found out. The American Atlas followed into service in 1959. Both were liquid-fueled monsters that took hours to prepare, which made them useful for a planned first strike and useless for retaliation.
The decisive change was solid fuel. Minuteman, deployed from 1962, could sit fueled in a hardened underground silo for years and launch in under a minute. Once missiles could answer within the flight time of an attack, retaliation became credible, and the entire architecture of deterrence rested on that fact rather than on anyone's good intentions.
Two refinements followed. Multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles, from around 1970, let one missile carry several warheads to separate targets, which multiplied arsenals without multiplying rockets and made arms control far harder to verify. And accuracy improved to the point where a warhead could be expected to land within a few hundred meters, which meant silos could be targeted, which meant a first strike against the other side's missiles started to look theoretically possible. That fear is the reason the sea-based leg matters: a missile submarine cannot be found and therefore cannot be disarmed.
The paranoid machinery
Thirty minutes is not long enough for a country to deliberate and it is barely long enough for it to decide. Every nuclear power therefore built systems to compress the decision: early-warning satellites and radars, airborne command posts, prepared retaliation options, and in the Soviet case the semi-automatic Dead Hand arrangement.
The cost of that compression is that mistakes have almost no time to be caught. The near-misses of the Cold War, Stanislav Petrov in 1983 deciding a launch warning was a computer error, the 1979 training tape loaded into the live system at NORAD, are not stories about faulty equipment. They are what a thirty-minute clock does to human judgment.
Where it stands
The United States keeps 400 Minuteman III missiles in silos across Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Colorado, each now carrying a single warhead, with the Sentinel program meant to replace them at spiraling cost. Russia fields Yars and the heavy Sarmat. China, which for decades kept a deliberately small force, began building three large silo fields identified by researchers in 2021 and is expanding faster than anyone else. North Korea has tested missiles of intercontinental range, which is the entire reason its program is treated as a different order of problem from everyone else's.
The land-based leg is also the most argued-about. Silos cannot move, so they invite attack, and their crews operate under the tightest time pressure of any part of the arsenal. Critics have proposed retiring them for thirty years. They are still there, because they are also the cheapest way to make an adversary's first strike require thousands of warheads rather than a dozen, and because arithmetic like that is what deterrence actually consists of.
