Gunpowder
The Chinese-invented explosive that let cannon shatter castle and city walls, ending the fortified feudal lord and centralizing power in gunpowder-armed states.

For roughly a thousand years, a high stone wall was the last word in political power. A lord behind a curtain of masonry could defy a king; the Theodosian land walls of Constantinople, twelve meters of layered stone and brick, had turned back every army that assaulted them until 1453. Then a powder that Chinese alchemists had stumbled on while chasing eternal life dissolved the whole arrangement.
From elixir to explosive
Gunpowder was a Chinese accident. Around the ninth century, Tang-dynasty alchemists hunting for an elixir of immortality combined saltpeter, sulfur, and charcoal and discovered instead a powder that burned ferociously and, confined, exploded. The oldest written formula appears in a Song military manual of 1044. Over the next four centuries the Chinese turned it into fire lances, bombs, and the first crude guns, and the knowledge crept west along the trade and war routes of Genghis Khan's Mongol empire. Europeans had the recipe by the mid-1200s and were casting cannon by the 1320s.
The end of the wall
The decisive demonstration came at Constantinople in 1453. The twenty-one-year-old Ottoman sultan Mehmed II hired a Hungarian founder named Orban, who cast a bronze bombard some eight meters long that fired stone balls weighing several hundred kilograms. It took sixty oxen to drag the gun into position. For nearly two months the great cannon hammered walls that had stood unbreached for a thousand years, and on 29 May the city that had been the heart of the Roman world for eleven centuries fell. The lesson was not lost on anyone: masonry that had meant safety was now a target.
Who could afford the guns
Cannon were expensive, and that expense reorganized politics. A single castle-smashing siege train cost more than most nobles could raise, but a king with a tax base and a treasury could. Artillery and the standing armies that served it flowed to central governments, and the fortified feudal lord who had bargained with monarchs for centuries lost his leverage. Historians call the two centuries of upheaval that followed the military revolution: bigger armies, professional soldiers, and state bureaucracies built to pay for gunpowder.
The same logic operated on a continental scale. Three great Islamic states, the Ottomans, the Safavids of Persia, and the Mughals of India, expanded on the back of siege artillery and massed handguns; historians label them the gunpowder empires. And when European ships began prying open the coasts of Africa, Asia, and the Americas, their edge was rarely sheer numbers. It was iron cannon bolted to hulls and carried ashore.
Defense eventually adapted. Engineers answered the cannon with the low, thick, angled star fort that could absorb a bombardment, and walls came back in a new geometry. But the old bargain was gone for good. After 1453 no ruler could hide behind stone and dictate terms to a state that owned the guns. Gunpowder set the ceiling on how much protection a wall could buy: without cannon an army could not break twelve meters of masonry, and with cannon no wall was high enough.
