Printing Press
Gutenberg's movable-type press (c. 1440) that made text cheap for the first time, triggering the Reformation, modern science, and mass politics.

Around 1440 a goldsmith in Mainz named Johannes Gutenberg solved a problem nobody had quite cracked in the West: how to cast individual metal letters cheaply, arrange them into a page, ink them, and press them onto paper by the thousand. He borrowed the screw mechanism from the wine and olive presses of the Rhineland, invented a durable oil-based ink, and built a mold that could stamp out identical bits of type. The result was the first machine that could mass-produce text. Before it, copying a Bible by hand took a scribe well over a year. A Gutenberg press could throw off up to 3,600 printed pages in a day.
The numbers that changed everything
Scale is the whole story. Historians estimate that in the early 1400s there were perhaps 30,000 manuscripts in all of Europe. By 1500, barely two generations after Gutenberg's 42-line Bible of 1455, presses were running in more than 250 cities and had produced somewhere between eight and twenty million printed books. Information had never gotten radically cheaper before, and it would not do so again until the twentieth century. Text that had been locked in monasteries and princely libraries suddenly circulated in market towns.
The political earthquake
Cheap print detonated the two upheavals that made modern Europe. When Martin Luther posted his Ninety-Five Theses in 1517, printers turned his German-language tracts into a viral flood; hundreds of thousands of copies moved across the Holy Roman Empire faster than any bishop could answer. The Reformation was the first mass movement run on the presses. The Scientific Revolution was the second: identical diagrams, star tables, and anatomical plates could now be reproduced without a copyist's errors, so a claim made in Padua could be checked in Krakow. Print also froze the shifting spoken dialects into standardized national languages, Luther's Bible doing for German what the King James would later do for English.
None of this was welcomed by those in charge. For the first time rulers and churches lost their monopoly on what people could read, and their response invented modern censorship: printing licenses, official presses, and in 1559 the Catholic Index of Forbidden Books, a running blacklist that survived until 1966. The reflex is permanent. Every state that has feared a new medium since has reached for the same tools.
Gutenberg was late
He was also, strictly, not first. Chinese printers were using ceramic movable type by around 1040, and Korea printed the Jikji, the oldest surviving book made with metal movable type, in 1377, seventy-eight years before Gutenberg's Bible. What Mainz added was an industrial system: metal type, oil ink, the press, and cheap paper combined into something that scaled easily across an alphabet of two dozen letters rather than thousands of characters. That is a large part of why the explosion happened in Europe.
Every later shock to the information order is a descendant of that workshop. The telegraph, the radio, the pamphlets that made revolutions, the internet that carries this sentence: all of them are arguments about the same thing Gutenberg started, which is what happens to power when copying gets cheap.
