About this quiz
Deng Xiaoping led China from the late 1970s into the early 1990s, after three decades of political campaigns under Mao Zedong. He was purged three times and returned each time. His reforms opened the country to foreign trade and investment and began the growth that made China the world's second-largest economy.
The quiz covers his life and the reform era, roughly 1978 to 1997, including the protests of 1989. Several questions check famous stories and quotations against the record. Most can be reasoned out without memorized dates.
