About this quiz
Most histories date the Holy Roman Empire from Charlemagne's coronation in 800 and end it in 1806, when it was dissolved during the Napoleonic Wars. It was never a single unified state. At its height it held hundreds of territories, from great duchies to single abbeys and free cities, across modern Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, the Low Countries and northern Italy.
The questions follow the empire's famous moments and the people behind them: emperors and popes, a reformer and a painter, the war that wrecked central Europe in the 1600s, and the treasures the empire left behind.
