Does Denmark vote with the US at the UN?
EU member states are bound by treaty to coordinate in international organizations (Treaty on European Union, Article 34). Denmark often speaks with the other four Nordic countries as one bloc. Its 2023 strategy calls for "pragmatic idealism," saying foreign policy "must deal with the world as it actually is: uncertain, unpredictable and complicated" (translated). The United States voted no on 174 of 192 recorded votes in 2025, so most members' agreement with it fell. Denmark has a seat on the Security Council for 2025 and 2026, its fifth term. On February 24, 2025 it voted for Ukraine's Assembly text against the United States. Hours later it abstained on the United States-drafted Resolution 2774 on the war in Ukraine in the Council.
In December 2024 President-elect Trump said that United States "ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity." In January 2026 he announced tariffs on Denmark and seven allies, then dropped them on January 21. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on January 22, 2026 that "we cannot negotiate our sovereignty." Denmark's UN ambassador Christina Markus Lassen said on March 3, 2025 that Greenland "is not on the Council's agenda." On September 22, 2026 the United States, Denmark and Greenland signed a security agreement on the sidelines of the General Assembly. It allows the United States to open two more bases, with Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig named as possible sites, and Denmark keeps sovereignty. It still needs approval from Greenland's parliament and the Danish parliament.
How does Denmark vote on Gaza and Palestine?
Denmark abstained on the first Gaza text on October 27, 2023. It co-sponsored Canada's failed amendment condemning Hamas. From December 2023 it voted yes on every later Gaza ceasefire text through 2025. It kept voting yes on texts that did not condemn Hamas. On June 4, 2025, speaking on a Security Council draft that Denmark co-wrote and the United States vetoed, Denmark's UN ambassador Christina Markus Lassen said: "Denmark regrets that the draft resolution did not condemn the heinous terrorist attacks by Hamas... It does not change, however, our support for the draft resolution as a whole."
Denmark had not recognized Palestine by October 2026. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said recognition should come "when a sustainable and democratic state in Palestine can be secured without the influence of Hamas." Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen set three conditions on September 22, 2025: the hostages released, Hamas disarmed and Hamas kept out of government. Ambassador Lassen told the Assembly: "The keys to recognition of a Palestinian state can no longer lie in the hands of the Israeli government." In 2025 Denmark voted no on the resolution backing the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. It aligns with NATO's nuclear policy and prefers the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
