Does Nigeria vote with the US or with Africa?

Nigeria votes with Africa and the developing world. In 2025 it voted yes 151 times, abstained 10 times, never voted no and did not vote on 31 recorded votes. Nigeria belongs to the African Group, the G77 (the UN's caucus of developing countries), the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and ECOWAS. Since January 2025 it has also been a partner country of BRICS (a group of large emerging economies), a step below full membership. Its foreign policy followed then foreign minister Yusuf Tuggar's "4D" doctrine of democracy, development, demography and diaspora. Tuggar said in September 2025 that "Our idea is to avoid the booby trap of entangling alliances or ideological over-alignment." Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu succeeded him as foreign minister in April 2026. Nigeria voted yes on a resolution backing the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which all five permanent Security Council members voted against.

The United States voted no on 174 of 192 recorded votes in 2025, so most members' agreement with it fell. President Trump announced in October 2025 that Nigeria would be named a "country of particular concern", a US watch list for religious freedom, citing what he called the killing of Christians. President Bola Tinubu responded that "The characterization of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality." US strikes hit ISIL-linked targets in Sokoto State in December 2025, in coordination with Nigeria's government.

How does Nigeria vote on Ukraine and Gaza?

Nigeria votes yes on resolutions affirming Ukraine's borders but abstains on texts that suspend Russia, seek reparations or hold it to account. It votes yes on every Gaza and Palestine text shown. On March 1, 2022, Nigeria's representative Nnamdi Okechukwu Nze told the Assembly that "we believe that the borders of countries are sacrosanct." He opened by admitting his prepared remarks were already outdated: "When this statement was prepared a week ago, the situation in Ukraine had not yet deteriorated into a war." Nigeria abstained on suspending Russia from the Human Rights Council and did not speak. It abstained on the November 2022 resolution saying Russia should pay reparations to Ukraine. The UN's summary says Nigeria's representative called on all parties to end hostilities and begin negotiations. Nigeria also abstained on the December 2025 resolution on Ukrainian children.

Nigeria voted yes on every Gaza text shown and co-sponsored the September 2025 decision endorsing the New York Declaration on a two-state solution. Vice President Kashim Shettima told the General Assembly in September 2025 that "a two-state solution remains the most dignified path to lasting peace for the people of Palestine." Nigeria has had a UN ambassador again since April 20, 2026, when Jimoh Ibrahim presented his credentials, after more than two years without one. The UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed, is Nigerian.
