United States
The United States has the world's largest economy, at $30.77 trillion in 2025. It spent $954.4 billion on its military in 2025, a third of the world total. It is the largest oil producer and has treaty allies across NATO and Asia. It has been at war with Iran since February 28, 2026.

Donald Trump has been president since January 20, 2025. He also served from 2017 to 2021. Grover Cleveland is the only other president to serve non-consecutive terms. Trump won 312 electoral votes and 49.8% of the popular vote in 2024. Born June 14, 1946, he was the oldest person ever inaugurated. He hosted The Apprentice from 2004 and was the first president with no prior government or military service. A gunman shot him in the right ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024. Republicans hold the White House, the House and the Senate. Midterm elections are on November 3, 2026. His approval averaged about 37% in late September 2026.

Who are America's allies and rivals?
The United States has defense treaties with the 31 other NATO members, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia and Thailand. About 169,600 active-duty troops were stationed abroad at the end of 2025. In May 2026 the Pentagon ordered about 5,000 troops withdrawn from Germany. Israel receives $3.8 billion a year in military aid but has no defense treaty. The United States and Israel have been at war with Iran since February 28, 2026. A US naval blockade of Iranian ports was reinstated on July 14, 2026. On January 3, 2026, US forces seized Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in Caracas. A trade truce with China was extended to January 2027 during President Xi Jinping's state visit in September 2026.

Who does the US trade with?
The United States exported $2,179.9 billion in goods in 2025 and imported $3,414.5 billion, a deficit of $1,234.6 billion. Mexico passed Canada as the largest export market. China's share of US imports fell from 13.5% in 2024 to 9.0% in 2025. In the first half of 2026, Taiwan sold more to the US than China. On February 20, 2026, the Supreme Court ruled that IEEPA, the emergency-powers law, does not authorize tariffs. Other tariffs replaced them. Yale Budget Lab puts the average tariff rate at 11.0% in August 2026, up from 2.4% before 2025. A 50% tariff on about $20 billion of Canadian goods took effect on August 22.

How strong is the US military?
SIPRI estimates the United States spent $954.4 billion on its military in 2025, 33% of the world total and 3.1% of GDP. The IISS counts 1,340,150 active troops. The Navy has 11 aircraft carriers. With reconciliation money, fiscal 2026 national defense spending is about $1.05 trillion. The Pentagon told Congress in September 2026 that the Iran war had cost at least $45.1 billion. Its count of US service members killed in the war reached 19 on September 22, 2026. The Army produced about 36,000 artillery shells a month in March 2026, against a goal of 100,000. The Pentagon estimates its Golden Dome missile shield at $185 billion.

How many nuclear weapons does the US have?
The Federation of American Scientists counts 5,042 warheads in the US inventory in 2026: a stockpile of 3,700 and about 1,342 retired. About 1,770 are deployed on land-based missiles, submarines and bombers, plus about 100 bombs in Europe. Only Russia has more. The United States is the only country to have used nuclear weapons in war, at Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. New START, the last treaty limiting US and Russian arsenals, expired on February 5, 2026. President Trump ordered a resumption of nuclear testing in October 2025, but no explosive test has been reported. The Sentinel missile will cost at least $141 billion, 81% over its original estimate.
