Why they rank where they do

  • Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein became the IMF's 191st member on October 21, 2024. The IMF first included it in its World Economic Outlook in October 2025. Liechtenstein had 41,237 residents at the end of 2025.

  • Singapore

The World Bank puts Singapore's GDP per person at about $517 in 1965, the year Singapore became an independent country.

  • Norway

Norway found its first big oil field, Ekofisk, in 1969. Norway's oil fund, the Government Pension Fund Global, was worth about $2.39 trillion on June 30, 2026, or about $426,000 per Norwegian.

  • Qatar

Qatar does not publish how many of its residents are citizens. Researchers estimated that about 12% were Qatari citizens in 2022. GDP per person divides the economy by all residents, including migrant workers.

  • Taiwan

Taiwan's GDP per person passed Japan's in 2024 and South Korea's in 2025. Taiwan's economy grew 8.76% in 2025 after adjusting for inflation, the fastest in 15 years. Exports of chips and servers for artificial intelligence drove the growth.

  • Japan

A weaker yen makes Japan's economy smaller when measured in dollars. The yen averaged 107.80 per dollar in 2000 and 149.57 in 2025. In July 2026 it fell to about 164, and on July 31 the US and Japan intervened together to support it, for the first time since 1998.

  • Guyana

A group led by ExxonMobil began pumping oil from the Liza field in December 2019. Guyana produced about 902,000 barrels a day in the first half of 2026. Venezuela claims the Essequibo region, about two-thirds of Guyana's territory, and held a referendum on it on December 3, 2023.

  • China

The World Bank has classified China as an upper-middle-income country since 2010. In July 2026 the World Bank's line for a high-income country was a gross national income per person above $14,375. China's was $14,230 in 2025, just below it.

  • Iran

The US and Israel began striking Iran on February 28, 2026, killing Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The rial fell from about 1.42 million per dollar at the end of 2025 to more than 2.2 million in early September 2026. Prices rose 69.9% over the 12 months to August 2026.

  • Venezuela

The IMF estimates that Venezuela's economy shrank by more than 75% between 2013 and 2021. About 7.9 million Venezuelans live abroad. US forces captured President Nicolás Maduro in Caracas on January 3, 2026.

  • Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu's government let the naira float on June 14, 2023. The naira fell from about 461 per dollar in May 2023 to a record low of about 1,681 in November 2024. In July 2025 Nigeria's statistics office changed how it measures GDP, which made the economy 35.4% larger on paper.

Why are Luxembourg and Ireland so rich?

Luxembourg and Ireland rank high partly because of how GDP per person is measured. Luxembourg's GDP includes the work of people who live in France, Germany and Belgium. In 2025, 233,260 people commuted into Luxembourg for work, 47% of all employees. They add to GDP but are not counted in the population. Liechtenstein is similar: in 2024, 24,943 commuters held about 57% of its jobs, and it has more jobs than residents.

Ireland's GDP includes the profits of multinational companies based there. In 2015 Ireland's GDP was first reported to have grown 26.3% in a year, after multinationals moved about €300 billion of assets to Ireland. The economist Paul Krugman called this "leprechaun economics". Ireland's statistics office created a measure called modified gross national income (GNI*) to strip out these effects. In 2024 it was €321.6 billion, 57% of GDP. On September 10, 2024, the EU Court of Justice ruled that Apple must pay Ireland about €13 billion in back taxes.

What are the poorest countries in the world?

Yemen has the lowest GDP per person at $420, followed by Afghanistan at $448, South Sudan at $470 and Burundi at $478. At purchasing power parity, Burundi is the poorest at $994.

Yemen has been at war since 2014. The UN says more than 22 million Yemenis need humanitarian help in 2026. After the Taliban took Kabul on August 15, 2021, most foreign aid to Afghanistan stopped. Aid grants had paid for about 75% of Afghanistan's public spending. Oil provides nearly all of South Sudan's exports and government revenue. South Sudan's only export pipeline runs through Sudan. The war in Sudan closed it in February 2024. Oil flows resumed in January 2025. More than 85% of Burundi's workers live off small-scale subsistence farming. In 2025 Burundi had constant shortages of fuel and foreign currency.

Which countries have gotten richer the fastest?

China's GDP per person rose from $963 in 2000 to $13,968 in 2025, a rise of 1,350%. That was the fastest rise of any country with at least 20 million people. Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Vietnam and Russia follow, each with a rise of more than 800%. These figures are in current US dollars and are not adjusted for inflation. The world average rose from $5,738 to $14,715 over the same period.

Guyana's GDP per person rose from $2,017 in 2000 to $6,174 in 2019 and $26,994 in 2025. Guyana had 835,986 people in 2025. Among countries with more than 10 million people, only three had a lower GDP per person in 2025 than in 2000: Iran ($7,050 to $4,264), Venezuela ($4,821 to $3,736) and Japan ($39,757 to $35,973).

What is GDP per capita at purchasing power parity?

GDP at purchasing power parity adjusts for what money buys in each country. An international dollar buys in a country what one US dollar buys in the United States. The IMF's figures use prices collected by the World Bank's International Comparison Program for 2021, published on May 30, 2024.

Some countries rank very differently in the two measures. Taiwan moves from 30th in US dollars to 9th at purchasing power. Guyana moves from 48th to 15th, and Russia from 64th to 44th. At purchasing power, China's GDP per person is $29,352, against $13,968 in US dollars. India's is $11,789, against $2,675. The United States figure is the same in both measures, $89,991, because purchasing power parity uses American prices as the baseline.

Is the United States richer than Europe?

The United States has a higher GDP per person than the European Union: $89,991 against $47,088 in 2025. At purchasing power parity, the gap narrows: $89,991 against $65,274.
