Why they rank where they do

Monaco

Monaco's statistics office (IMSEE) publishes life expectancy only for its 9,959 citizens. For 2023 to 2025 it was 88.5 years: 90.6 for women and 86.4 for men. The UN figure covers all residents and is a model estimate.
Japan

Japan's 2025 life table gives women 87.33 years and men 81.35. On September 1, 2026, Japan had 107,677 people aged 100 or over, the first time above 100,000. 87.6% were women. Japan's oldest person is Fuyo Kishimoto of Kyoto, born December 20, 1911, aged 114.
South Korea

South Korea's own statistics put life expectancy at 62.3 years in 1970, when records began, and 83.7 in 2024: 86.6 for women and 80.8 for men.
Singapore

In 2024, 8.4% of adults in Singapore smoked every day, the lowest share ever recorded. In 2019 it was 10.6%.
Spain

Spain has fewer avoidable deaths than most of the EU. In 2022 it had 124 deaths per 100,000 people from causes that prevention could have avoided, against 168 in the EU as a whole. Deaths that timely medical care could have avoided were 62 per 100,000, against 90.
France

Jeanne Calment of France died in Arles on August 4, 1997, aged 122 years and 164 days. She is the oldest verified person ever.
United Kingdom

The world's oldest living person is Ethel Caterham, who was born in Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire, on August 21, 1909. She turned 117 on August 21, 2026.
Costa Rica

José Figueres abolished Costa Rica's army on December 1, 1948. From 1995 Costa Rica set up primary care teams called EBAIS across the country. In 2023 Costa Rica spent $1,163 per person on health. The United States spent $13,473, about 12 times as much.
Ukraine

The UN made its 2025 estimate for Ukraine in 2024. The UN has verified 17,257 civilians killed in Ukraine from February 24, 2022 to August 31, 2026, and says the true number is likely much higher. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimates that 125,000 to 150,000 Ukrainian soldiers were killed by June 2026.
Russia

Mikhail Gorbachev's anti-alcohol campaign began with a decree of May 7, 1985. Russian men's life expectancy then rose from 62.7 in 1985 to 64.8 in 1987. After the Soviet Union collapsed, it fell to 57.4 in 1994. The WHO reported that alcohol consumption per person in Russia fell by 43% between 2003 and 2016.
Cambodia

The Khmer Rouge took Phnom Penh on April 17, 1975, and ruled until January 7, 1979. An estimated 1.5 to 2 million people died, a fifth to a quarter of the population. These deaths explain Cambodia's very low life expectancy for 1975.
Botswana

In January 2002 Botswana launched Masa, the first national program in Africa to give free antiretroviral HIV treatment to eligible citizens. 15.7% of adults aged 15 to 49 lived with HIV in 2024.
Timor-Leste

Indonesia invaded Timor-Leste on December 7, 1975. Timor-Leste's truth commission estimated at least 102,800 conflict-related deaths from 1974 to 1999. About 18,600 were killings or disappearances, and the rest were deaths from hunger and illness. These deaths explain Timor-Leste's very low figure for 1975.
Chad

941,722 refugees from Sudan crossed into Chad between April 2023 and August 2026. Chad's under-five mortality was 97.3 per 1,000 live births in 2024.

Which countries have the lowest life expectancy?

Nigeria has the lowest life expectancy in the world, followed by Chad, South Sudan and the Central African Republic. All eight of the lowest-ranked countries are in sub-Saharan Africa.

About 75,000 women died from pregnancy and childbirth in Nigeria in 2023, 28.7% of the world's total and the most of any country. Nigeria had the world's highest under-five mortality in 2024, at 115.6 deaths per 1,000 live births, and 30.3% of the world's malaria deaths. In Lesotho, 17.1% of adults aged 15 to 49 lived with HIV in 2024, the third-highest rate in the world. As AIDS spread, Lesotho's life expectancy fell from 59.3 in 1990 to 43.2 in 2006.

Why do women live longer than men?

Women live longer than men in all 196 countries in the ranking. Worldwide, women's life expectancy is 76.2 and men's is 70.9. The gap is largest in Russia, where women's life expectancy is 79.3 and men's is 67.7.

The WHO reported in 2019 that of the 40 leading causes of death, 33 shorten men's lives more than women's. A 30-year-old man is 44% more likely than a woman to die of a noncommunicable disease, such as heart disease or cancer, before 70. Men's suicide rates are 75% higher than women's. Men's homicide rates are 4 times higher, and their road-injury death rates are more than twice as high from age 15. Men also seek health care less often than women.

Which countries have gained the most years of life since 1975?

Among countries with at least 20 million people, Algeria gained the most, rising 29.8 years from 46.9 in 1975 to 76.7 in 2025. Ethiopia gained 29.0 years, from 38.9 to 67.9. Bangladesh gained 24.6, from 50.6 to 75.2. South Korea gained 19.8 years and China gained 17.4.

In 1975 the world's life expectancy was 58.3. No country had a life expectancy of 80 or more, and 91 countries were under 60. In 2025, 44 countries are at 80 or above and only six are under 60.

Why is life expectancy lower in the United States than in other rich countries?

By UN estimates, the United States has a life expectancy of 79.6, against 85.0 in Japan, 82.9 in Canada and 81.6 in the United Kingdom. The CDC's own figure for 2024 is 79.0, which it called its highest level ever.

A study by Jacob Bor and colleagues in JAMA Health Forum in May 2025 compared the United States with 21 other rich countries. If the United States had had their death rates, 705,331 US deaths in 2023 would not have happened. That is 22.9% of all US deaths and 46.0% of US deaths under age 65. Drug overdose deaths fell from 105,007 in 2023 to 79,384 in 2024. Guns killed 44,447 people in 2024, and 62% of those deaths were suicides. The United States spent $5.3 trillion on health in 2024, 18.0% of GDP.

How did COVID-19 affect life expectancy?

By UN estimates, global life expectancy fell from 72.6 in 2019 to 70.9 in 2021 and recovered to 73.3 in 2024. The WHO said COVID-19 "wiped out nearly a decade of progress."

Some countries lost several years. Peru's life expectancy fell from 76.3 in 2019 to 71.6 in 2021. Bolivia's fell from 67.8 to 61.4 over the same period. Peru reported 221,072 COVID-19 deaths, about 670 per 100,000 people, the highest official rate of any country. The WHO estimated about 4.7 million excess deaths in India in 2020 and 2021, almost 10 times the roughly 481,000 official COVID-19 deaths. India's health ministry rejected the estimate.
