Why they rank where they do

Monaco

Monaco's 2025 census counted 38,857 residents from 144 nationalities. Only 24% were Monégasque citizens. 27.3% of residents were 65 or older, and 60 were aged 100 or more.
Japan

On September 15, 2026, 29.6% of Japan's people were 65 or older, a record. In 2025, 9.43 million people aged 65 or over were still working, 13.8% of all workers. Adult diapers have outsold baby diapers in Japan since the early 2010s, and in September 2024 the paper maker Oji Holdings stopped making baby diapers for Japan.
Italy

Eurostat, the EU's statistics office, puts Italy's median age even higher, at 49.1 on January 1, 2025. That is the highest in the European Union, where the median is 44.9.
Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina's 1991 census counted 4,377,033 people. The next census, in 2013, the first since the 1992-1995 war, counted 3,531,159. The fall of about 846,000 came from both war deaths and emigration.
South Korea

On December 24, 2024, South Korea's Interior Ministry announced that 20% of residents were 65 or older. That made South Korea a "super-aged society", the term for a country where at least 20% of people are 65 or older. By the end of 2025 the share was 21.2%.
Taiwan

At the end of December 2025, 20.06% of Taiwan's people were 65 or older, so Taiwan also became a super-aged society. In 2025 Taiwan recorded 200,268 deaths and 107,812 births.
Cuba

Cuba's statistics office (ONEI) says 1,011,269 Cubans emigrated in 2022 and 2023 alone. In 2025 Cuba recorded 68,064 births and 136,214 deaths. ONEI's own figure for Cuba's median age is 45.
Russia

After President Putin ordered a mobilization on September 21, 2022, more than 200,000 Russians crossed into Kazakhstan in two weeks. The Russian news outlet The Bell estimates that at least 650,000 people who left Russia after February 2022 have not returned. Most were aged 20 to 40.
China

China's working-age population (aged 15 to 59) started shrinking in 2012. China's population fell for the fourth year in a row in 2025, by 3.39 million, to 1.405 billion. 23% of Chinese are now 60 or older.
United States

The US Census Bureau's own figure for the median age in 2025 is 39.4, a record. The Census Bureau says growth in the younger age groups is "largely due to immigration". Net immigration to the United States fell from 2.7 million in 2024 to 1.3 million in 2025.
Qatar

In April 2024 Qatar counted 2,190,411 males and 908,455 females, about 2.4 men for every woman. The International Labour Organization estimated that migrants were more than 88% of Qatar's population in 2020 and 94.4% of its workforce. In the United Arab Emirates, 64% of the 11.3 million residents were male at the end of 2024.
India

By UN estimates, India passed China as the world's most populous country at about the end of April 2023. India's median age is 11.3 years below China's.
Niger

46.6% of Niger's people were under 15 in 2024. Niger had the world's highest fertility rate every year from 2000 to 2018, before Somalia and then Chad passed it.
Central African Republic

49.0% of the Central African Republic's people were under 15 in 2024. The Séléka rebels seized power in March 2013, and a UN peacekeeping mission has been in the country since April 2014.

Which countries have the youngest populations?

The Central African Republic has the youngest population, with a median age of 14.5. Niger and Somalia follow at 15.6. In all, 38 countries have a median age under 20, and 35 of them are in Africa. The other three are Afghanistan, Yemen and Samoa. Seven countries are younger than they were in 1975: Guinea, Mozambique, Chad, DR Congo, Mali, Somalia and the Central African Republic. Women there have some of the highest fertility rates in the world, and six of the seven have been through long wars.

The political scientist Henrik Urdal studied conflicts from 1950 to 2000. He found that where people aged 15 to 24 were more than 35% of all adults, the risk of armed conflict was 150% higher than in countries with an age structure like most rich countries. Other large studies, which compared young people with the whole population, found no such link.

Which countries are aging the fastest?

South Korea has aged the fastest. Its median age rose by 26.8 years from 1975 to 2025, from 18.8 to 45.6, the largest rise among countries with at least 20 million people. Taiwan's rose by 25.5 years, Thailand's by 23.3, China's by 21.0 and Japan's by 20.1.

As birth rates fell in East Asia, the share of people of working age rose. The economists David Bloom and Jeffrey Williamson estimated in 1998 that this explained as much as one-third of East Asia's fast growth from 1965 to 1990. In 2016 a World Bank country director wrote that Thailand was "getting old before getting rich". 16.0% of Thais were 65 or older in 2025, up from 12.9% in 2020.

Which countries will be the oldest in 2050?

South Korea is forecast to have the oldest population in 2050, with a median age of 56.7, just ahead of Taiwan at 56.3. China's median age is forecast to reach 52.1, against 41.9 in the United States. China's median age passed America's in 2019.

Older populations mean fewer workers for each retiree. On September 13, 2024, China's legislature decided to raise the retirement age over 15 years from January 1, 2025: for men from 60 to 63, and for women from 50 or 55 to 55 or 58, depending on the job. South Korea's National Assembly passed a pension reform on March 20, 2025 that raises contributions from 9% of pay to 13% by 2033. South Korea's government now expects the national pension fund to run out in 2064 instead of 2056.

What is the median age of the world?

The world's median age was 30.9 in 2025, up from 20.7 in 1975. The UN forecasts 36.1 for 2050. Half of the world's people are older than the median age, and half are younger.

In 1975 only one country, Monaco, had a median age above 40. In 2025, 44 countries do, and the UN forecasts 87 by 2050. The UN says 2018 was the first year in history in which people aged 65 or older outnumbered children under 5. The UN projects that people aged 80 or older will outnumber babies under 1 by the mid-2030s, and that people aged 65 or older will outnumber children under 18 by the late 2070s.
